Almost Friday Reads…

First things first

NYT

Jails Have Become Warehouses for the Poor, Addicted, and Mentally ill

Considering we spend upwards of 22,000$ each year jailing the very violent offender with the very petty.offenses (such as unpaid traffic tickets) it  would go without saying that: We Need to Fix America’s wasteful corrupt biased Criminal Justice System.

The second article deals with one Ferguson residents ordeal with Unpaid tickets bouncing him back and forth in the jail system…which is deemed the New Jim Crow and sounds eerily reminiscent of the old Jim Crow’s peonage system used to punish financially in the days of Reconstruction.

Next: Jada Smith takes on the Degradation of Women by Black Men

I applaud her for taking a stand, I just believe that Men should be responsible for building instead of tearing down…and I think its there (men’s) weakened state in society that is causing the most damage in our communities and especially towards their women…who I feel like they oppress…suffering what many social scientist call a double-oppression.

And last but not least (especially first…since I wanted this blog’s main focus to be fashion, but…whoops with all the social issues at stake now…)

Is Fashion working to bridge some of its long standing racism/elitism/diversity issues etc?

NYT Vanessa Friedman pens this article, but I still feel if they are really trying to bridge the gap, Why not tell the story from a minority perspective i.e. Robin Givhan’s who is a fine journalist from the Washington Post?

I guess…as they say, Beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder, and The lion always tales the tale from his perspective…

So basically, i feel that, Fashion is a very rich and diverse field, just like the art world, where many ideas and references can be tolerated…however, as a minority, I feel like we need to creating more artistic outlets for ourselves, and use our collective skills and talents instead of waiting for white media to prove it wants to be down…for a season.
